Thursday - Final Preparations

Apologies to those expecting another exciting blog entry yesterday. It was just a typical practice day, with more beautiful (if not a bit hot) weather, the big news being that we've departed Henley Rowing Club as home base, and moved into the HWR venue for the remainder of our time here. HWR venue is directly across from Fawley, adjacent to Remenham Court area, and just downstream of Upper Thames RC. The course is 1500m, running from the traditional Henley Royal start line, to the Remenham Club. As I may have outlined previously, our event has 30 entries, and the regatta only has room/time for a 16 boat field to race through elimination rounds. To choose the top 16 boats, there will be a time trial first thing tomorrow. The time trial is approx 1400m and is run head race style, one boat starting every 30 sec. Once the top 16 crews are determined, the top 8 will be seeded, and the bottom 8 randomly matched up to them via random draw. While it is true that the slowest competitor could be paired against the top seed in round one, I'm not doing the math to say what the odds are of that. The important thing is that round one of racing happens just after 2 PM Friday with 8 races taking place. Round two will be Saturday late morning, with 4 races. After round 2 only four crews will remain, and they will race Sunday in the semi-final and final rounds.

All that being said, we are confident that our crews are up to the challenge of the time trial and will bring their best to the racing. What we do not have a clear picture of is how competitive the overall 30 boat field of crews in the Colgan Cup event is. We are looking forward to racing and mixing it up with the Brits, and will take the racing just one round at a time.

This evening is a reception for International crews at Leander Club, where we will dress up in our finest regatta kit, followed by dinner and rest for tomorrow.

Until our next entry, Cheers!
